The Blade Shape You Choose For Kayaking Is Important

This article has been viewed 18 times.

Aside from deciding on a feathered or non feathered kayak paddle, there are other things that you need to consider as well when it comes to the shape of the blade. Often it becomes a trade off between what you are going to get in performance compared to the energy you will need to expend to get what you want in performance. For example, blades that are large and symmetrical and are great for giving you speed, but its going to cost you in energy. If you are into speed with your kayaking adventures then this is the shape you will want.

If you are using your kayaking activities as a leisure sport where you can just get out on the water and take your time, then go for one of the smaller asymmetrical shaped blades. You will find that it still gets you where you want to go albeit a little slower but you won’t become near as tired.

The next thing you are going to note is the choices of shape:

Flat

Your standard kayak paddle with no special features.

Cupped

This shape will remind you of a spoon. You will find that when you are utilizing this shape of paddle that you will be much more stable as you continue with your paddling.

Dihedral

There is an angle to these blades that allow for the water to flow evenly over both sides of the paddle. You will find that you won’t experience the normal twisting that occurs when paddling if you use this style.

You can actually have the best of both worlds if you haven’t decided on your preference yet. There are combo paddles that consist of a mix of the cupped and dihedral shapes. You are also going to want to know about feathered and non feathered features
