When a marriage is going sour it isn’t something that happens over night. The concept often is though, that things will get better and with this thought in mind potential emergency financial survival plans are not put in place how to survive financially can be overwhelming.
When that day arrives however, that the marriage has truly come to an end it can often be in the heat of the moment of an intense fight and the man walks out the door. Unfortunately this is something that many baby boomers face as a midlife crisis. Now the legalities start but in the meantime what can you do as the wife with two kids to get off to school in the morning and $10. in your purse?
Aside from the emotional devastation that you have to deal with you need some quick financial solutions. Unfortunately it is not a matter of walking into court the next day and having a judge place an order on your husband to start paying support. Here are a few quick steps you can take in the meantime.
First thing in the morning head to the bank, and hopefully you have a joint bank account. What you need to do is withdraw half of your checking and savings. The battle of who owes what, and who has to pay who, can take place after the initial emergency. This doesn’t mean you take the money and blow it because you are frustrated and angry. There may be obligations that you are both jointly responsible for and the money must be kept in reserve yet you have to be able to survive financially in the meantime.
If you are working woman and your paycheck or any other income you receive goes into your joint account, put a stop on it immediately. Open a new bank account and have your money put into there.
At least you will have some money in hand to carry on your daily living. This doesn’t mean that you sit back now and wait for your “x” to call the shots. Your next immediate step is getting legal advice as quickly as possible.
Be sure to keep your regular household payments up as best as possible. The utilities company doesn’t care about your personal or financial problemsIf you have no source of income then visit your social services department to see what kind of assistance is available to you. The one thing you want to avoid is getting behind in any of your household bills.
Keep a running tab of all your costs for court purposes.
If you cut your costs to a minimum, spend wisely and keep up with the necessary bills you will survive financially until the financial issues have been settled in court.
